Ms. Kaufman started in the futures industry as a CTA/CPO from 1979-1982, then built a back office accounting system that ultimately became InvesTier® – the preeminent international hedge fund and fund-of-funds multi-currency investor accounting software that was ultimately acquired by SunGard in 2002. During that 20 year span, she additionally offered and performed what has now become known as “shadow accounting” for major funds as part of her business offering. In parallel, from 1998-1999 she was a Y2K consultant to Chase, doing diligence on over 125 third party firms with whom the alternatives group did business and, on a temporary basis, ran the DLJ fund accounting group just prior to its acquisition by Credit Suisse, in 2000. Because of her vast array of skill sets, her expertise spans from front office to back office, from investor relations to operational risk management and everything in between, short of creating the actual trading systems themselves. Her former clients like Moore Capital, Dubin & Swieca (now Highbridge), Richard Dennis, Mesirow, Cargill, Bank of Montreal, DLJ, Ivy Asset Management, HedgeServ, SEI, PFPC, Viteos, Advent, Gottex and dozens of other high profile firms, representing many types of industry participants, have afforded her the opportunity to both understand the complexities of various types of entities as well as the ability to draw upon her high level contacts to make meaningful introductions between firms, when warranted.
Most recently, Ms. Kaufman has focused her efforts on operational excellence. She consults to emerging managers, hedge funds and various other types of financial industry participants, performing high level operational due diligence, identifying the gaps a firm has and then strategically advising and orchestrating ways to mitigate the risks – such as educating firms on “best practices”, introducing firms to the right technology solutions/service firms to leading the search for a new administrator. In the right circumstances, she will also take on the role of part time COO/CCO.
Ms. Kaufman was the lay conference committee chairperson for the Managed Funds Association (MFA) for four years. In addition to consulting, she speaks at conferences, writes articles and creates customized workshops for current and prospective industry participants, including regulators, fund administrators, pension funds and technology firms. She educates firms on an overview of the industry, but additionally, teaches managers how to differentiate themselves when their goal is to attract capital allocations and teaches allocators how to find managers that comply with a firm’s corporate governance criteria.
